KEY INNOVATION STORIES

Neo-Chromato, The Circular Breakthrough: Giving printed textiles a new life

Imagine being able to give printed textiles a completely new life – not by mechanically recycling them, but by actually removing the prints and starting fresh. This is exactly what Mimaki’s Neo-Chromato Process achieves, in what many considered impossible.

Traditional polyester textile recycling is energy-intensive and often requires incineration. When textiles are dyed or printed, they typically reach the end of their creative life, even if the fabric itself is still perfectly usable. The Neo-Chromato Process changes this completely.

This World First innovation allows for the decolorization of previously dyed polyester textiles that have been printed using dye sublimation technologies. Think of it as a reset button for printed textiles. The process not only eliminates the need for incineration but significantly reduces the energy consumption associated with textile recycling.

Impact on Textile Industry

The implications are revolutionary. Fashion brands will be able to reuse their textile materials multiple times, dramatically reducing waste and resource consumption. What was once a one-way journey from raw material to waste can become a circular process, where textiles are reused again and again.

This innovation exemplifies Mimaki’s approach to sustainability: identifying seemingly insurmountable challenges and transforming them into opportunities for positive change. It’s not just about reducing impact – it’s about reimagining what’s possible in sustainable printing.

We recognise that true transformation requires industry-wide effort. That’s why we actively share our knowledge and collaborate with partners across the printing ecosystem. Through industry events, technical workshops, and open innovation initiatives, we’re helping build a community committed to sustainable printing.

As we continue developing technologies like Neo-Chromato and TRAPIS, we’re creating possibilities for a more sustainable future in printing.
